A Home Practice Setup
Setting up a warm and inviting space for your monthly Kaiut Yoga sessions is an essential part of creating an effective and enjoyable practice. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare:
Choose a Quiet Space:
Select a room with minimal distractions and noise if possible.
Ensure the lighting is soft but adequate for visibility on the screen.
Comfortable Flooring and wall space:
Use a yoga mat, rug, or other non-slip surface.
Keep a blanket and a bolster nearby for additional support.
Once you have your location, place your mat near an empty wall space
Warm Ambience:
Consider adding soft lighting, candles, or incense to create a calming atmosphere if needed.
Set the room temperature to a comfortable level
1. How to Set Up Your Practice Space
Creating a comfortable practice space at home will enhance your experience and assist you in your self care routine.
- Equipment and Props
- Yoga Mat: A supportive mat is key. If you’re in a wheelchair or have limited mobility, consider placing a non-slip mat under the chair.
- Blankets: Use blankets for extra cushioning or to support certain poses.
- Chair: We do use a sturdy chair as a prop during some practices and those who need or prefer a seated practice.
- Blocks or Books: Blocks or a few hardcover books provide extra support if you need to modify postures.
- Bolsters or Pillows: A bolster or a pillow will be a must for most practices and great for added comfort, especially if you’re pregnant or dealing with limited mobility.
2. Technology and Setup
- Device: A laptop, tablet, or smartphone with a front-facing camera for Zoom classes. For the best experience, a larger screen like a laptop or tablet is ideal.
- Stable Internet Connection: Make sure you’re in a spot with a strong internet connection to avoid interruptions.
- Tripod or Stand: A tripod for your device ensures your camera stays steady. Position it at about chest height and adjust so we can see your full body. This is especially helpful for instructors to provide personalized adjustments.
- Headphones (Optional): If you prefer, wear headphones for clearer audio, especially in a noisy environment.
- Dual-Device Option: Use one device for streaming your video to Alex and another to watch the spotlighted participant or to better hear the cueing.
Camera Positioning Tips
Having the right camera angle helps your instructor see you clearly and provide guidance. Here’s how to set it up effectively:
- Angle: Position the camera at a 45-degree angle if possible. This view gives the instructor a comprehensive view of your posture using a phone tripod.
- Distance: Place your device at least 4-6 feet away. Ensure it captures your entire mat/body while you’re both standing and sitting. Camera/tripod placed hip to chest in height.
- Lighting: Make sure the lighting is bright enough so you’re easily visible. Natural light or a lamp facing you (not behind you) works best.
- Visual need of class: It’s best if you have two modes of technology. One to be able to view the class and one for you to have your camera angled correctly. One of the devices must be muted and volume off.
Special Considerations for Health Conditions
Kaiut Yoga is adaptable, with gentle and effective methods to support a variety of health needs. Here’s how to make the most of your setup if you have specific considerations:
- Amputees: If you’re an amputee, arrange your mat or chair comfortably, with props nearby for support.
- Pregnancy: Keep a bolster or pillows nearby to support your belly and back. Use a chair if needed for balance.
- Wheelchair: Position your camera so it shows you from your wheelchair. Use a mat for feet if you want extra traction.
- Fractures, or Injury Recovery: Practice near a wall if possible to assist with balance. Have props on hand for additional comfort.
- Parkinson’s Disease, MS, and Autoimmune Conditions: Stability props like blocks or a chair are helpful. Ensure your practice space is safe, so you can focus on slow, steady movements.
Props such as bolsters, blocks, and straps can play a significant role in this practice. They provide stability, enhance comfort, and allow practitioners to ease into poses without strain. By using props, the body can rest deeply in positions, promoting relaxation and allowing healing processes to unfold naturally ensuring that the practice meets you where you are, fostering resilience, reducing tension, and improving mobility gently and effectively.
